Apart
from this we have many Monasteries and
also a Church of St. John in the wilderness
that has in it the Grave of Lord Elgin,
a former British Viceroy who died at
Dharamshala in 1863. Other places of
Interest are Bhagsunath, Chinmaya tapovan,
Kangra, Masroor Temple, Nurpur, Maharana
Pratap Sarovar, Pragpur etc. Dharamshala
was recognized as the headquarters of
KANGRA DISTRICT in March 1855. Lying
on a Dhauladhar spur, from a War memorial
monument at 1300 meters to Mcleodganj
at an Altitude of 1770 mts, spread over
an 8 kms rising slope the place has a
distinct character.
Lower Dharamshala houses shopping complexes
and the upper Regions consisting of Forsytheganj
and Mcleodganj retain Colonial township
flavours. Mcleodganj gained new appeal
with the arrival of his Holiness Dalai
Lama in 1966. Vibrant with Tibetan Culture
and Chant of Buddhist Prayers it is lovingly
called " Little Lhasa " From
Dharamshala is visible the Sprawl of
Throbbing Kangra Valley which captures
fullness of a Light and Shadow Play that
the Dhauladhar ranges go through when
the Sun dips behind the Snows. History
to Has Played a Light and Shadow games
with many places in the valley. |
