Map of Barog
Barog was developed in the 20th century around the time when the narrow gauge railway station between Kalka and Shimla was being constructed in1903. The railway tunnel here is named after Colonel Barog who was engineer in charge of making this tunnel. He started the digging work from both the sides, but made an error in the calculation and found that the two ends of the tunnel did not meet. He was fined Rupee 1 by British government. Humiliated by this, Colonel Barog committed suicide and was buried near the incomplete tunnel. After this, the work of the tunnel was handed over to Chief Engineer H.S. Harrington under the guidance of local sage Bhalku. It is the longest tunnel among the 103 tunnels and was completed between July 1900 and September 1903.
