MANDI - Varanasi of the Hills
 
The erstwhile capital of the princely state of Mandi, Himachal Pradesh has a history that is colorful, fascinating and intriguing. Tour the 81 stone temples that remained mute spectators to historic events and be enamored by this Himalayan state's enchanting history.Mandi is almost the centre of Himachal, lying along the left bank of the river Beas in the foot hills of medium sized Shivalik ranges,entails a rich heritage of culture, of both historical and theoligical significance. Comprising of the two erstwhile states of Mandi and suket,stories indicate the age of the beautiful temple town, situated at the bottom of the valley, and with a hot climate, Surrounded by hills, clad in pines, there is a large plain which has grain fields and rochards, between Mandi and Sundernagar.

Bhootnath Temple
Bhootnath Temple (760m):
This temple is in the midst of the town. Its construction in ‘Shikhar Style’ was started by Raja Ajbar Sen in the year 1527, the year in which Mandi also started coming up.
   
Shyamakali Temple
Shyamakali Temple (850m):
Raja Shyam Sen (1664-79) got a temple of Goddess Kali built on top of Tarna hill here.
   
Rewalsar Lake in Mandi
Rewalsar Lake (1360):
This Lake, 24 Km away from Mandi town, rests on a mountain spur and is protected by dense vegetation. Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists hold the spot sacred alike.
