Sirmaur / Nahan

Nahan, situated on an isolated ridge in the Shivalik hills, is a well laid-out picturesque town. It is the district headquarters of Sirmour district in Himachal Pradesh. This is a historic town founded by Raja Karan Prakash as the capital city in 1621, at an altitude of 932 m above the sea level. The town takes its name from the saint who lived in this place with a companionable Nahar, a lion.

The pilgrim areas Renuka, Ranital Garden, Paonta Sahib, and Trilokpur temple and the famous Suketi Fossil Park are situated around this town. The town is watered by man made lake and decorated with temples and gardens. The town has a bazaar with narrow cobbled streets, which provides all kinds of things. It has a pleasant climate throughout the year.

Around Nahan

Jaitak Hills :Situated at an altitude of 1500 m above the sea level, Jaitak Hills is a place of both historical and tourist importance. The Gurkha Fort at the top of the hill is believed to have been built by Ranjor Singh in 1810.

Gurkha Fort:It was constructed by Ranjor Singh Thapa, the Gurkha leader, when he attacked and sacked Nahan in about AD 1810. The fort was built with materials removed from Nahan Fort and Palace. It commands a fine view of the Sain, Nahan and Dharthi hills.

Trilokpur Temple : Located at Trilokpur in Himachal Pradesh, this unusual cave temple was built by Raja Dip Prakash in 1573. The temple of the goddess 'Mahamaya Bala Sundri' is quite famous and attracts lakh of pilgrims from all over Northern India.

Gurudwara dedicated to the tenth sikh guru, Gobind Sigh, who spent five years here. It is a bustling town. The story goes that the place acquired its name after the Guru has lost an ornament that he wore on his foot, known as Paonta.
