Christmas festivities often combine the commemoration of Jesus' birth with various customs, many of which have been influenced by earlier winter festivals. Traditions include the display of Nativity scenes, Holly and Christmas trees, the exchange of gifts and cards, and the arrival of Father Christmas (Santa Claus) on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning.

Popular Christmas themes include the promotion of goodwill, compassion, love, acceptance, kindness, generosity, excitement and peace.
 
 
 

The New Year's Eve is December 31st, the final day of the Gregorian Year, and the day before the New Year's Day. New Year's eve has its separate identity of its own like the New Year Day. The New Year's Eve is celebrated with parties and social gatherings until 12 "0" clock midnight. The parties continue till then, till the anxiety of the New Year exists. In India, most celebrations take place in the larger cities like Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Mumbai. People generally gather and host private parties along with dinner and few drinks. The celebrations generally begin in the dusk

The youth generally takes part activelyin these celebrations and the rest of them have their own way of enjoying the evening. A lot of fireworks show takes place in the evening and people thoroughly enjoy the concerts and the parties.

Ice Skating Carnival

Ice-skating carnival of Shimla is a gala time for the Shimla people. The ice-skating rink of Shimla is located at Lakkar Bazar Shimla. The skating club of Shimla has successfully completed its sixty years. Ice-skating normally begins in early December and carries on to February. Clear skies and low temperatures provide series of uninterrupted sessions. There are two sessions every day, in the morning and in the evening.


The Shimla ice-skating rink is the only Asian natural ice-skating rink. A large number of enthusiastic skaters take an active part in the Shimla ice-skating carnival. Large number of foreigners participate in the carnival. Infact they carry their skating shoes with themselves. The ice-skating carnival is celebrated in Shimla with extreme pomp and grandeur
 
     
 

International Himalayan Festival is held in Mcleodganj district Kangra (10-12 Dec). The festival is celebrated every year on December 10 to commemorate the conferment of the Nobel Peace Prize on the Tibetan spiritual leader, Dalai Lama. Cultural troupes from Rajasthan, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Chamba and Shimla will perform during the three-day festival.


These efforts must be made to prevent further environmental degradation in Mcleodganj as the place would lose its charm.The Himalayan International Festival this year does not have teams from Nepal, Mizoram and Nagaland. Few foreign tourists have turned up for the festival.
