Bharatiya festivals and holy days are designed to reveal the greatness and integrity of Indian culture. Some festivals welcome the seasons of the year, the harvest, the rains, or the full moon. Others celebrate religious occasions, the birthdays of divine beings, saints, and gurus (revered teachers), or the advent of the New Year.
Spring is here and for the people in the cold hilly state of Himachal Pradesh it is time for fun and festivity with the celebrations of Maha Shivratri.

Maha Shivratri is celebrated throughout the country. Maha Shivratri falls on the I3th (or I4th) day of the dark half of 'Phalgun' (February-March). The name means "the night of Shiva". The ceremonies take place chiefly at night.Proclaimed by ancient Indian texts as Devbhumi -- "Land of the Gods" -- and believed to be the earthly home of the mighty Lord Shiva; Himachal Pradesh has an almost palpable presence of divinity.

Mandi also known as Choti Kashi celebrates the auspicious festival of Maha Shivratri in the month of February with devotion and religious fervor. The week long festival is celebrated with cultural programs held at night and people enjoy the day by participating in the various stalls put up in the fair.
