Himachal
Pradesh as a state is a pot-purri of different cultural and
ethnic groups. Every valley
and region of Himachal Pradesh offer something culturally unique,
be it their handicrafts, dresses, music, language or cuisine.

Abundant
snowfall and smooth slopes go on to serve that extra dollop
of adrenaline
during the winter months in Himachal Pradesh. Every year
the slopes at Manali and Narkanda serve as playgrounds for
the skiing festival.
In winter is a fairy-tale town holding out an irresistible
invitation to the skiers and snow-lovers. The event is held
every year in the second week or third week of February, located
at a height of 6,000 ft. to 7000 ft., it offers breathtaking
ski gradients at Solang Nala. Its smooth-curved ridges and
escarpments promise unmatched exhilaration both to expert skiers
as well as beginners. Heli-skiing is also available
at Manali. Nestled
in the

picturesque
ranges of Himachal, Narkanda (3143 mts.) is a quiet town,
64 kms from Shimla. The event will be held
from February 4th -7th. In winter it coats itself with thick,
soft snow turning its gentle slopes into an excellent playground.
The pleasure of skiing makes Narkanda an attractive destination
for many during the winter months. Some of the very steep
and smooth slopes hereafter a different kind of skiing experience.
These slopes especially appeal to the cross country skier
for. Narkanda is set amid fine coniferous forests.All basic
skiing equipment is available on rent. A winter carnival
held around the middle of February is a major attraction
for
the skiers.

Shivratri
is celebrated all over the country, but it has assumed special
significance for Mandi, once the capital town of a princely
state. Week-long celebrations are held here amidst colorful
festivities. Shivratri used to be grand royal celebration
marked with religious fervor and gaiety. Shivratri and other
fairs and festivals of the state have gone a long way in
preserving the cultural heritage.Over 200 hill Gods and Goddesses
are likely to converge on the ancient town of temples on
the eve of eight-day International Shivratri Fair being held
here from March 6th to 13th this Year. On elaborately decorated
palanquins, hundred of local deities are carried to the
town.

Accompanied
by folk
bands, they make their first stop at the Madho Rai Temple
and then go to pay obeisance to Lord Shiva at the Bhootnath
Temple.
This is followed by festivities-music and song, dance and
drama. The people in Himachal love festivals and participate
in all the local festivals
and fairs with great enthusiasm. Yet, all the while the atmosphere is surcharged
with deep religious devotion. |
